Addiction Rehab Toronto understands the difficulty families go through when they experience a loved one suffering from addiction. It presents a wide range of challenges that parents are not equipped to cope with. This is why we offer 2 different family programs at our facility. One program is for families who have clients at the facility and attend in order to learn how to help their loved one maintain sobriety through a variety of techniques and approaches. Our second program is for concerned families who do not have their loved one attending treatment at the facility but are looking for solutions. The challenge with helping someone who is letting their life be controlled by substance abuse comes with a wide range of skills that are needed in order to make a significant change.

Research your Loved One’s Substance of Choice
The internet is filled with information on how to cope with the struggles that come when a loved one is engaging in substance abuse. The physical dependency, how the drug is metabolised and the effect it has on the body, you will then have a better understand of withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal can be best understand as the return to a balanced state the body goes through when filtering out the addictive substance. Psychological dependency, drug-seeking and drug-using behaviours, also needs to be treated to relieve a loved one of addiction. This is why our treatment program is based in the biopsychosocial model, encompassing the biological, social, and psychological issues.
Connect with others
It’s not easy to cope when you witness your loved one behave in an unhealthy dysfunctional way. There are support groups out there and you will quickly realize your problems are shared with others. This can help you realize you are not alone. These groups are a nonjudgement, safe environment for you to express concern and learn how to overcome addiction together with your loved one.
Family Therapy Sessions
Consequences from substance abuse quickly spreads from the individual to the family, at times this cause conflict and trouble in understanding each other. Improving communication among the family is a common theme family therapists are prepared to tackle. They are well equipped to take down any conflicting barriers between family members to help improve the quality of family life.
